Today’s title about sums it up. This is in relation to so much really, but of course we’re pulling this phrase from Jerome Powell, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, when he said yesterday during his virtual press conference, that the Fed isn’t even thinking about thinking about raising interest rates. Well, I think Mr. Powell and company, along with those in the White House and the Capitol, could be well summarized by that statement – not even thinking.
The Fed stands ready to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes. Zero interest rates for as far as the eye can see. Billions and billions more for the purchase of US Treasuries and agency debt. One emergency facility after the next. What’s the cost? What are the limits? Presumably none! No costs and no limits – this must mean after all this time walking around on this planet, we’ve finally found the FREE LUNCH! All it took was a global pandemic and for central bankers to turn on their printing presses to full speed and punch the after burners to boot. Didn’t we say this was a banana republic?
