Over the weekend the former President, Donald J. Trump, was acquitted for the second time by the Senate. In a vote of 57-43, it was the most bipartisan impeachment. However, a 2/3 majority is required to convict and remove and to bar an official from holding federal office again. Even the speech made by minority leader, Mitch McConnell, laid the groundwork for a convincing vote of conviction. McConnell of course decided to vote against conviction, seemingly hiding behind some form of constitutional technicality, and more realistically, he is eyeing the 2022 mid-term elections and is hoping to once again become the Senate majority leader. His vote to acquit is to serve as cover so as to not upset members within his caucus. Despite this, McConnell still makes the argument that Trump is not out of the woods, as criminal and civil charges may be brought against him. And for historical reference, McConnell, along with several other Republican Senators who were around for the Clinton impeachment, voted to convict Clinton, but voted to acquit Trump. What a circus! It’s election day in Georgia as both Senate seats are up for grabs. At the time the podcast it’s a dead-heat in both races at or around 50/50. It’s quite possible that the winners may be declared at some point on Wednesday. However, if the race is too close to call, then the overseas ballots may be the deciding factor. There are about 17,000 overseas votes that have a deadline for this Friday. So, if these votes would make a difference to the outcome, then it may not be until the weekend or next Monday, when one or both of these races are called.

As it stands now, the Republicans have 50 seats and the Democrats 48 seats, including two Independent Senators who caucus with the Democratic party. Should the Democrats win both seats in Georgia, then this would give the majority to the Democrats because the incoming Vice President, Kamala Harris, serves as the President of the Senate, and would thus be the tie-breaking vote. Such a scenario would also give the Democrats control of both chambers of Congress and the White House. A similar scenario as we witnessed following the 2016 elections, but for the Republicans.

The question that remains, is does it really make a difference as to who controls the Senate? It may mean things move more quickly or slowly depending on who holds the majority – but if the destination is over the cliff, does it really make that much of a difference if it’s quick or a little slower? When and where have any of these politicians took a real stand against something and stopped one terribly flawed bill after the next? When and where did anyone stand up against the out of control deficits and national debt? Same for monetary policy. Same for our defense budget. Same for our welfare state for both corporate and low income transfer payments. Same for our national security and surveillance state, et cetera, et cetera. So lip service will be given to those ideas and principles that so many believe in; yet nothing structural will be done about it. Our advice is to leave these two-parties and to stop voting for them – they have not done anything to deserve your vote. So as this audience knows, from time to time I’ll send a letter to my elected officials. Well during the impeachment trial, I sent a letter to one of my Senators, voicing my views and simply asking that the whole truth of the matter be known – which would entail further witness testimony and the release of documents. And let the chips fall where they may. If guilty, then convict and remove. If exculpatory evidence came to light, then acquit. Let the truth be known and may justice be served. I think that was a reasonable request. Well we all know what transpired. Nonetheless, my Senator (his office) did respond to my note and so during this podcast, I read his reply and breakdown his argument(s) and statements. Busy day on the global headline news front. In the US Senate the early phase of the trial of President Donald Trump commenced. Today was primarily procedural and arguing for or against various amendments. However, both sides had the ability to start discussing their case. There is no question, that the House Managers came well-prepared and equipped to make their arguments. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the President’s legal team. They appeared ill-prepared and agitated. Virtually only arguing the same talking points that the President has been shouting for months. Mainly, their argument was about process, and at times, arguing about things that were not even relevant to the case, which was embarrassing and laughable. Furthermore, most of the defense team’s arguments were easily countered by the House Managers citing facts in evidence. If this is the best the President can do – then we must say that things are not looking good. The only thing they may be relying on, is the fact that Republicans hold the majority in the Senate. However, the more the facts, documents, and witnesses become known, (assuming this becomes a fair and open trial with documents and witnesses), then the public may begin to see what has really been going on within this Administration. Thus, perhaps, placing more political pressure on some Republican Senators to rethink voting down party lines. Alternatively, perhaps if documents are released and witnesses come forward, they may show and prove that the President is in the clear. However, we will not know all of this unless further documents are released and witnesses testify. Let the truth be known, and may justice be served.

On the international front, the coronavirus is making headlines as there are cases now recorded in several countries other than China, with one even in the US. The World Health Organization will be making a determination as to whether this can turn into something more serious or if it can and will be shortly contained. Please keep yourself updated on these events as the virus can be deadly.

On the financial and economic front, the world’s “elite” gather in Davos, Switzerland to attend their annual world economic forum where they discuss the prior year and what’s in store for 2020. The theme thus far – central banks are causing bubbles! Wow!? Really?! They’re just figuring this out now? Where have they been for the past decade? We also have Ray Dalio, who we cite here on occasion, as stating that “cash is trash.” Perhaps he is concerned with inflation picking up and/or the value of the US dollar dropping. On some occasions, he has even stated that the US dollar may soon lose its “reserve” status. With nearly $24 trillion in debt and no end in sight, it is quite possible that the world will move away from the US dollar. The question is, to what degree and when? Another historic day for the United States of America. Today the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, John Roberts, was sworn in today in the US Senate. Following his swearing in, the Chief Justice swore in the members of the US Senate. This is a serious process and it needs to be treated with the gravity and thoughtfulness that it deserves for the sake of the American people and for the respect of the US Constitution. The trial is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, 21 January 2020. The trial may last as short as a couple of weeks or perhaps stretch to over a month, should witnesses come forward and further documents be entered into the record. Time will tell and let us hope the members of the US Senate take their oaths seriously and administer impartial justice. May the truth be known and justice served.
